According to the New England Journal of Medicine, both men and women who supplement with at least 100 IU of vitamin E per day for at least two years have a 37-41% drop in the risk of heart disease. The 77% drop in nonfatal heart attacks reported in the double blind CHAOS study, in which subjects were given 400-800 IU vitamin E per day, provides even more convincing data.

20. CoQ10...35 mg - Coenzyme Q10 is contained in virtually every cell of the human body. The most coenzyme Q10 is located in the mitochondria, the area of cells where energy is produced. Because they contain the most mitochondria per cell, the heart and liver have the greatest amount of coenzyme Q10. Coenzyme Q10 may take several months to show beneficial results, but it has been proven in double-blind research that Coenzyme Q10 helps people with congestive heart failure. People with congestive heart failure who take coenzyme Q10 should not stop taking it suddenly because sudden withdrawal may exacerbate the symptoms of congestive heart failure. Other improvements have been reported in people with cardiomyopathies-a group of diseases affecting heart muscle. Research (including double blind studies) in this area has been consistently positive. Also, due to its effect on heart muscle, researchers have studied coenzyme Q10 in heart arrhythmia patients. Preliminary research in this area reported improvement after approximately one month in people with premature ventricular beats (a form of arrhythmia) who also suffer from diabetes. Angina patients taking 150 mg per day of coenzyme Q10 report a greater ability to exercise without problems. This has been confirmed in independent investigations. Coenzyme Q10 appears to increase the heart's tolerance to a lack of oxygen. Perhaps as a result, preliminary research has shown that problems resulting from heart surgery occurred less in people given coenzyme Q10 compared with the control group.

Clinical trials have confirmed hawthorn is beneficial for persons with stage II congestive heart failure, even showing as much effectiveness as the diuretic drug captopril. Congestive heart failure is a serious medical condition that requires medical treatment rather than self-treatment. Other studies have shown it may help those with stable angina. Also, it may mildly inhibit angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) and reduce production of the potent blood vessel-constricting substance angiotensin II. This reduces resistance in arteries and improves circulation in the extremities. The bioflavonoids in hawthorn are potent antioxidants. Hawthorn extracts may mildly lower blood pressure in some individuals with high blood pressure. However, these extracts should not be thought of as a substitute for cardiac medications for this condition.
